Site-wide advert
A banner at the top of each page. The reader can close it; it reappears if they navigate away.
Pop-ups
A window that opens on the site: for everyone, only logged-in readers (it also appears when they log in), or only visitors. Only one pop-up at a time: the most recent one that hasn’t yet been viewed.
