Reading notes
Contour accuracy
Coastlines and international borders are drawn based on real geographical data. The boundaries of Eldorian territories are approximate: they follow historical borders at the scale of the map without reproducing their detail. A border drawn here with a margin of error of a few kilometres does not prejudge its exact course.
The 6 categories
The metropolis comprises the integrated provinces, which are administered directly from Aldara. The administered territories, shown in hatched lines, are under Eldorian authority but are due to be returned — Lebanon and Syria until 1971, and Israeli territories from 1982 to 1983.
The Overseas States retain their own governments and international representation. The possessions are administered without their own local government. The outposts are island strongholds; the bases are military installations situated on sovereign foreign territory.
View the dates in the atlas
The atlas does not produce one map per year but one map per state: around 20 snapshots, each dated according to the event on which it is based. A territory is included as long as it appears in the most recent published version; its removal date is therefore that of the first version in which it no longer appears, not the date of its return. Western Thrace, which was returned in 2016, thus disappears from the 2018 map; the Sinai, which was sold in 1972, from the 1972 map; Equatorial Guinea, occupied in 1942, only appears in the 1943 list. The exact dates are those given in the chronology and on the ‘Metropolis and Overseas States’ page.
Front lines
6 years of conflict have revealed lines of operation. These lines indicate directions of advance and areas of contact, not surveyed routes. They appear only on the regional map, where the scale makes them legible.
The conflicts themselves are described in detail in the ‘Wars and Conflicts’ section.
